Weekly goals and objectives are also listed in the newsletter. Under each content area, I list the main learning targets for each week. Please read the weekly newsletter to support your child at home.
JANUARY Our class started a Kindness Tree in our hallway. We discussed what kindness looks like, feels like, and sounds like. The students will recognize others for their Acts of Kindness. When they witness Kindness, they write it down on a heart, and then we add it to our Kindness Tree. Students are on the look out for all those people displaying Kind acts around the school. This has encouraged many students to show (more) Acts of Kindness to their friends too. You may see your child spreading Kindness at home too.
We will use this topic as one of the ways to meet our 2nd grade learning targets. Check back in to see more as the month progresses!
Some of the videos below are some of our favorites to show and discuss Kindness. The first two are so touching and we have watched them more than once even though one is in a different language. The message is so powerful. Also, if you haven't watched Kid President before, you are in for a real treat!!! So cute!!!
DECEMBER We learned about celebrations from around the world during the month of December. We have been using what we learned about each country to work on our 2nd grade learning targets. We learned a ton of new information about different cultures and how they celebrate. We compared and contrasted between their traditions and our own. We read a lot of informational pieces as well as fun fiction pieces to add to our discussion.
The students also did an persuasive writing peice to persuade Santa why they would make the best elf helper. The students had to write a rough draft, edit their piece and make revisions. We have been working on writing in paragraph form too. They did so well organizing their ideas!!
OCTOBER We studied bats to during the month of October. We used the information that we learned to work on our 2nd grade learning targets. We wrote an information piece about bats. The students had to write a rough draft, edit their piece, and make revisions. We used the KWL charts to record information that we found from information text and videos. We then used the KWL and vocabulary to aid us in our writing. The students read their writing pieces to their classmates.
You and your child can watch the videos below at home together to share in their learning.
